A Royal Marine, Ben miraculously survived stepping on a Taliban landmine in 2008 on the eve of his 21st birthday. His injuries were catastrophic: he lost his left arm, lower right leg, and sustained numerous other wounds. His chances of survival were slim.
Yet not only did Ben survive, he rebuilt his life with grit, humour, and determination.
Today, Ben is a highly sought-after motivational speaker, regularly receiving standing ovations from corporate, educational and public audiences alike. His keynotes are honest, uplifting and profoundly motivating — covering themes of resilience, endurance, diversity, disability, mental health, and the power of living life to the full.
Ben ran the London Marathon just 12 months after being blown up — and again the following year. Since then, he has completed challenges including climbing the Three Peaks, trekking to Everest Base Camp, and taking part in Vodafone’s31 mile Poppy Run to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. Along the way he has raised money and awareness for charities such as Child Bereavement UK and Mountain Rescue.
Ben’s story captured the world’s attention. On his emergency flight home from Afghanistan, his fellow passenger Prince Harry quietly willed him to survive — later describing Ben as a hero. But Ben doesn’t see himself that way. As he says: “I’m alive, aren’t I? I’m the same person. I’m just missing two limbs, which I lost fighting for my country. How can I complain about that?”
He is also a natural communicator and media contributor having:
- Presented For Crown and Country on ITVX
- Fronted a strand on BBC’s The One Show
- Featured in the BBC documentary War Torn Warriors (trekking to Everest Base Camp)
- Appeared regularly across UK and US media to discuss resilience, disability, inclusion and motivation
- Was a regular Judge for The Millies alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Frank Lampard
