Lord Colin Moynihan was Minister for Sport in Margaret Thatcher’s Government since when he has built an unrivalled reputation for his knowledge of sports administration having been an elite sportsman himself as well as a successful businessman.

Colin was Chairman of the British Olympic Association from 2005 through 20012 guiding the British Olympic Team to success at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He was a Director of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and a member of the four person London Olympic Board who had oversight of the whole Olympic and Paralympic project from start to finish. On the closing of the Games Colin was awarded the International Olympic Committee’s Order of Merit by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). 

Colin has served as a member of the IOC’s 2009 Congress Editorial Committee; the IOC International Relations Commission 2008-2013 and, as an elected member of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) Executive Board from 2006-2011. He was Chairman of the European Olympic Committees 'Sport for All' Commission from 2008-2012. In 2019 he became a member of the IOC’s Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport Commission. In 2020 he became a member of the IOC Public Affairs and Corporate Communication Commission on which he currently serves.

He has been a Steward of the British Boxing Board of Control and Vice President of the World Boxing Association. He is a Patron of Disability Snowsport UK and has been President of British Water Ski since 2006.

Colin has been a Trustee of the Sports Aid Foundation, a member of the Sports Council, a Trustee of the Oxford University Boat Club, President of the British Biathlon Union, Chairman of British Ski & Snowboarding, President of the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association, Patron of the Skiers Trust of Great Britain and a Life Member of British Rowing.

Colin was a Rowing Silver Medallist in the 1980 Olympic Games, a Gold Medallist in the Lightweight Rowing World Championships in 1978 and a Silver Medallist at the 1982 World Rowing Championships. 

He read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at University College, Oxford from where he won a post graduate research scholarship to Brasenose College, Oxford. At Oxford he was also a double blue in rowing and boxing and President of the Oxford Union Society when he defeated Benazir Bhutto for the Presidency. 

He served in the House of Commons as an MP from 1983-1992. In addition to being Minister for Sport, his political career also included being Minister for Energy in Margaret Thatcher’s Government. He was responsible for the launch of the UK’s first Renewable Energy Support Programme. He subsequently became the first President of the British Wind Energy Association. He was Minister for the Environment and a member of the ministerial team responsible for water privatisation. He was Senior Foreign Affairs Spokesman for the Conservative Party in the House of Lords. He was Special Adviser to the Rt. Hon. Michael Howard MP - during his time as leader of the Conservative Party as well as Chairman of the Conservative Campaigning Board. 

His business career has included directorships of publicly quoted companies in the USA and the UK. As a Company Director and economist, he has specialised in privatisation programmes, energy policy and initiatives to boost participation in sport and recreation.

In 2019 he successfully led the establishment of a Lords Special Inquiry Commission into a National Plan for Sport & Recreation which reported in 2022. Colin continues to work and speak on sports policy initiatives. 

He currently remains active in business as Chair of Amey - a leading United Kingdom-based infrastructure support service provider, Chairman and a Partner of Buckthorn Partners who specialise in energy transition and a member of InSport Education’s Advisory Board. InSport Education is a leading business school for sport based in London which delivers immersive, real-world learning programmes for ambitious executives and students in the sports industry.
