As schoolboy, Phil won 3 Schoolboy International Caps and 4 Youth International Caps.
He joined Llanelli RFC in 1967 and played for them for 16 seasons. He was captain for six consecutive seasons during which time the team won the Welsh Cup three times. Phil played 29 times for Wales, winning two Grand Slams and three Triple Crowns. He captained for two seasons (eight games) and won two Triple Crowns and one Grand Slam as captain.
He went on two British Lion Tours - in 1975 (South Africa) and 1977 (New Zealand). Phil also played 16-20 games for the Barbarians, including the famous match against New Zealand in 1973.
Phil retired in 1981 and has since worked as a Sports Development Officer for the Sports Council for Wales and Llanelli Borough Council as a being a freelance journalist.
